SERVICESUK Visitor Visas
A UK Standard Visitor Visa allows overseas nationals to visit the UK for a range of temporary purposes, including:
Visiting family and friends
Tourism and holidays
Attending weddings, graduations and other important events
Short business activities, meetings and conferences
Certain permitted study activities
Visitor visas are temporary visas and do not lead to settlement in the UK.
Unlike some other immigration routes, visitor visas are discretionary. This means there is no automatic entitlement to a visa simply because an applicant has family or friends in the UK, or because a sponsor is willing to support their visit.
Applicants must show that they are genuine visitors and that they intend to leave the UK at the end of their stay.
This will usually involve demonstrating that they:
Have a genuine and credible reason for travelling
Intend to leave the UK before their visa expires
Can support themselves financially during their visit (or have a sponsor who can do so)
Have strong personal, family, employment or financial ties to their home country
Every application is assessed on its own merits. Applicants must provide clear and consistent evidence to support their circumstances, the purpose of their visit and their intention to leave the UK at the end of their stay. Where this evidence is missing, insufficient or inconsistent, the Home Office may refuse the application.
